succenturiate lobed placenta - A succenturiate (accessory) lobe is a second or third placental lobe that is much smaller than the largest lobe. Unlike bipartite lobes, the smaller succenturiate lobe often has areas of infarction or atrophy. The risk factors associated are advanced maternal age, primigravida, proteinuria in the first trimester of pregnancy, and major malformations in the fetus. The membranes between the lobes in such placenta can be torn during delivery, and the extra lobe can be retained after rest of the placenta has been delivered, with consequent postpartum bleeding.
Oh that's wonderful! Don't you just love all the risks associated with pregnancy. It is truly a miracle that any of us are alright. Glad you and baby are doing well!

ReplyDeleteThanks for posting about this. I found out about my "accessory" while being a bad girl and reading my medical chart after succombing to boredom when a nurse left me alone for too long. I asked my doctor about it before he even had a chance to bring it up. I too had early bleeding, but am happy that it "resolved" itself and am expecting a girl 02/07/2010. Thanks again and good luck with your upcoming little boy! I have one and they are fab-u-lous!
ReplyDeleteI have a dear friend who just lost her baby boy yesterday at 22 weeks due to this condition. I dont understand it ... I have looked it up. None of it makes sense to me. Can you link me to something that describes the condition better?

So sorry to hear about your friends loss. Sadly there is little information out there and it is treated rather non chalantly by OBGYN's. I am so grateful that my son survived. I just tucked him in to bed - he's 18 months old and I can't believe it everytime I look at him.
